Para-athlete & Bronze Medalist
Director - Strategic Programmes and Outreach
He is a champion, a hero, and an inspiration to millions. Against all odds, Sharad Kumar made India proud and bagged a bronze medal in the Men's High Jump at the Tokyo Paralympics. In his words, "It is a nice thing that has finally happened. It's been long due."
The Patna-born athlete, whose impairment in his left leg is the result of the effects of polio, had a long and challenging journey to the podium. From being bullied in school for his physical shortcomings to being banned from participating in the Asian Para Games in Guangzhou; to being on the verge of pulling out from the Tokyo Paralympics 2021 final due to a knee problem which he sustained a day before - for him, every adversity created a new opportunity.
The double Asian Para Games (2014 and 2018) high jump champion is rather vocal about social issues and actively advocates to address these at the policy level. We speak to Para-athlete and Bronze winner Sharad Kumar at the upcoming session of the Changemakers series as he shares his journey from being told to resign to a bench during games in schools to emerging as the bronze medalist in the Tokyo 2021 Paralympics.
Sharad Kumar is an Indian para high jumper and a former World No. 1. He made his International debut at the 2010 Asian Para Games. At the 2014 Asian Para Games, he won the gold medal in the high jump (T42), breaking a 12-year Asian Games record, and reclaimed the world no. 1 position.... Kumar participated in the 2016 Summer Paralympics finishing sixth. He won Silver in the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships. At the age of two, he suffered paralysis of his left leg and started high jump in Class 7 while studying in St Paul's School in Darjeeling, where he broke the school and district records competing against non-disabled athletes. Sharad Kumar has completed a master's degree in International Relations at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India. He has also studied international business management at Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute in Ukraine.Read more
