Chief Scientist, World Health Organisation
Director - Strategic Programmes and Outreach
What does it take to be at the helm of global affairs in the face of a pandemic? We ask this question to our Changemaker for July, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist at the World Health Organisation, who has been leading the fight against COVID 19. The virus outbreak and the number of vaccine trials have put the spotlight on the World Health Organisation (WHO). As the first Chief Scientist of the Geneva-based WHO, Swaminathan has been busy offering suggestions to countries to step up measures to fight the pandemic and taking stock of the situation on a day-to-day basis.
As we move forward, many health leaders like Dr Soumya Swaminathan have the daunting task of evaluating the roadmap as the pandemic evolves. Fortunately, we've made significant progress in our understanding of this disease, our ability to combat it, and our efforts to help those suffering from it, but the measures put in the next 6-8 months will be most critical in battling the pandemic, she says.
